These Are Days You'll Remember

Pregnancy. Our future. The hope of something magical and joyful. The near certainty of falling in love with the most beautiful person you’ve ever seen, your newborn baby.

Despite the aches, pains, burps and stretch marks, pregnancy is a glorious time. I recall being so full of excitement, hope, love and joy with the growing child inside of me. I do believe that my pregnancy with my 2nd child may have been one of the happiest times in my life. He brought with him the chance of achieving the birth experience that I had so longed for the first time around, and it was such a wonderful future to prepare for.

Motherhood, despite all its challenges, trials, exhaustion and troubles is also full of endless joy. The light and love that our children bring into our lives is what keeps us going. They make us laugh and remind us of the best parts of ourselves.

No matter how much they can temporarily hurt our feelings, or push us to our limits, we forgive them and we love them more and more each day.

The trying times can get the best of us, and momentary mishaps can make us forget that these are days we’ll remember.

One of my all time favorite musicians is Natalie Merchant. A close friend turned me on to Natalie when I was 14 years old and I have remained madly in love with her music, lyrics and pretty much anything she does. She wrote the song These Are Days when she was the lead singer of the band The 10,000 Maniacs, from the album Our Time In Eden, released in 1992.

This song has recently been on my mind. Throughout the years it’s had different meanings for me and has been associated with happy times like the carefree feeling of being a young girl spending your days with your best girlfriends. More recently it has reminded me of how important it is to enjoy the present moment, to cherish the time I have with my children while they are young and adorable and – to be happy now.

Sometimes it feels like you will be pregnant forever. Sometimes all you want is to be at the next “better” phase on your journey whatever you think that may be.

The seasons of our life change, but each changing season brings something new and special.

Let’s not reminisce too much over the past or long and hope too much for the future, or we might miss what is here now in front of us.

With love,
Doula Christie
These Are Days
These are days you’ll remember
Never before and never since, I promise
will the whole world be warm as this
and as you feel it, you’ll know it’s true
that you are blessed and lucky
it’s true, that you are touched by something
that will grow and bloom in you
These are days you’ll remember
When May is rushing over you with desire
to be part of the miracles you see in every hour
you’ll know it’s true, that you are blessed and lucky
it’s true, that you are touched by something
that will grow and bloom in you
These are the days
that you might fill with laughter
until you break
These days you might feel a shaft of light
make its way across your face
and when you do
you’ll know how it was meant to be
see the signs and know their meaning
You’ll know how it was meant to be
hear the signs and
know they’re speaking to you
to you
