Why We’re Doulas…The Answer Might Surprise You
We’re not all home birthers. We’ve birthed in hospitals, birth centers AND at home, with pain medications, medical interventions and via cesarean. On a personal level, we’ve experienced the wide range of birthing options.
We’re not “addicted” to birth. We don’t consider ourselves “birth junkies” (and we really are not fond of those terms.) We work in birth because it is where we’re needed.
We didn’t all grow up around babies. You won’t see us pining to hold your baby. Now, if you ask us to hold her while supporting you, that’s a different story altogether…
We’re doulas because we support women.
We are drawn to this particular time in a woman’s life – the childbearing years – because it is a time of vulnerability and great need. It is tenuous. It is delicate. It is so very special. It is a life-altering transition. And because you can never have enough support.
You may have an amazing community of friends and family around you (or you may not.) You may have a fully available partner (or you may not.) You may have 100% confidence in your body, your mind and your will to birth and parent exactly as you choose (or you may not.)
We have seen the difference that doula support creates for women during this sensitive time of life. We have seen them overcome their fears and doubts and push themselves farther than they ever thought possible. We know that women are strong, fierce and powerful.
But we also know that it is not always easy, no matter how much support you already have. Having somebody tend solely to your needs and comfort brings stability and relief. Having a trained and experienced friend, coach, adviser, assistant, educator, supporter, DOULA makes a difference.
You are not alone. We’ve got your back. We believe in you and we know you can do it. We will stand beside you until you make it to the finish line.
Regardless of how much support you already have, you can always use more.
We’re doulas, not because of what we choose for ourselves. We’re doulas because we care deeply about supporting you.
