The federal Healthy People 2020 goal for low-risk, first-time c-section deliveries is 24.7%.
There are times when c-sections are absolutely necessary, of course. However, some medical interventions increase the risk of c-section. Therefore, the goal is to care for women in labor so that indications for c-sections do not develop. When c-sections are not medically necessary, they may be more likely to harm mothers and babies than to help them.
