Understanding Pregnancy Cravings

Different kinds of food on plates, pregnancy cravings

Pregnancy is full of surprises. And one of the most common surprises is pregnancy cravings. Sometimes, these aren’t subtle cravings but all-consuming and relentless.

A recent study recorded women’s responses to how pregnancy cravings feel, and they said:

  • “It’s all you can think about.”
  • “Nothing is going to taste as good.”
  • “If you deprive yourself of it, you’re just going to want it even more later.”

Also, anywhere from 45% to 90% of pregnant women experience cravings. So, if you’re experiencing pregnancy cravings, you’re in good company.

It may leave you wondering…

“Why do I want pickles all of a sudden?”

Or…

“I need to stop for cranberry juice right NOW, or I’ll die.”

Now, those examples are a little dramatic, but if you’ve experienced pregnancy cravings, you get it.

It might truly be all you can think about. And there’s a reason for that.

What Pregnancy Cravings Do NOT Mean

First off, let’s get a few things straight. While pregnancy cravings are fascinating, not everything you hear about them is true.

Let’s bust a few myths:

Myth #1: “Cravings will reveal your baby’s gender.

While this may be a fun old wives’ tale, there’s no science to back it up. Sweet cravings don’t mean you’re having a girl, and salty cravings don’t mean you’re having a boy.

Myth #2: “Your body always craves what it needs.”

While some cravings may indicate a nutritional need, this isn’t always the case. For example, craving a huge slice of cheesecake likely just means you feel like having a comforting treat—and that’s it. Some cravings might indicate a deficiency, while others are simply preferences or emotional responses.

Myth #3: “You’re craving specific foods that your baby will like.

Again, there is no research to back up this claim. While it may seem true (and maybe sometimes is), there is no evidence to prove this.

Myth #4: “You will have strange cravings.

Not all women have strange cravings. Some have less dramatic cravings, and some have none at all. Pregnancy is unapologetically unique.

Hormonal Changes Impact Pregnancy Cravings

Now that these myths have been debunked, let’s talk about the “why” behind your cravings.

During pregnancy, your body undergoes significant hormonal changes.

Hormones like estrogen and progesterone surge, impacting your sense of smell and taste. This heightened sensitivity can make some foods irresistible while others become unappealing.

Also, your body is working overtime to meet your baby’s nutritional needs. And sometimes, your body runs low on what it needs. This is all connected to the hormonal changes you’re going through. It’s not uncommon to be low on nutrients such as calcium or iron while growing a new baby.

And if that isn’t enough, hormonal changes can also have an emotional impact. They can leave you feeling anxious, lonely, and frustrated. Many pregnant women have trouble managing this wide range of emotions. So, sometimes cravings can spring from this.

Different Types of Pregnancy Food Cravings

Cravings can vary widely—some are sweet, some are salty, and others might even seem strange. Here’s a breakdown of common pregnancy cravings and what they could mean:

  • Sweet. Are you suddenly dreaming of chocolate cake or tubs of ice cream? Some experts believe that sweet cravings may be linked to a need for quick energy, though hormones and other factors can also contribute. Just remember to balance sweet indulgences with nutritious options.
  • Salty. Pickles, chips, or anything salty calling your name? Some believe this could mean your body needs more sodium due to increased fluid retention and blood volume during pregnancy. However, while pregnancy does lead to increased blood volume, there isn’t strong evidence that salty cravings directly correlate with a need for more salt.
  • Sour. Citrusy foods like lemons or sour candies are common cravings and can help with nausea. These cravings could also be a response to your heightened sense of taste.
  • Protein. Craving burgers, eggs, or something else protein-rich? You may simply need additional protein for your growing baby.

Pica: Non-Food Pregnancy Cravings

Are you craving non-food items?

Maybe something like…

  • Ice
  • Chalk
  • Dirt
  • Soap
  • Ash
  • Cornstarch
  • Hair
  • Glue
  • Metal

Not only does this feel strange, but it can also be a sign of a mineral deficiency.

Known as pica, this can throw you for a loop!

If this is happening to you, make sure to let your healthcare provider know. This isn’t considered an emergency, but it could mean you need a supplement or a more balanced diet.

Typically, pica often resolves once nutritional needs are met or after birth, but if it persists, further evaluation may be needed.

Food Aversions During Pregnancy

Food aversions are just as common as pregnancy cravings. You may experience both.

They might leave you asking, “Why can’t I even look at chicken anymore?”

Food aversions often stem from the same hormonal changes responsible for cravings. A heightened sense of smell and taste are usually to blame. This makes certain foods smell or taste unpleasant, not helping your potential morning sickness.

Here’s a list of the most common pregnancy food aversions:

  • Meat
  • Eggs
  • Onions
  • Milk
  • Garlic
  • Tea and coffee
  • Spicy food

Having aversions can make pregnancy more challenging, so we’ve put together a few tips for dealing with them.

Coping tips for food aversions:

  • Listen to your body. (It’s fine to avoid foods that seem unpleasant right now.)
  • If you’re missing an important nutrient, replace it with something else. (For example, substitute meat for nuts and beans.)
  • Experiment with different preparations of the same food. (For example, if cooked spinach turns your stomach, try it raw in a smoothie.)
  • Focus on small, frequent meals.
  • Talk with your healthcare provider or a doula for creative solutions to make sure you’re still on a healthy track.
